Fast & Fresh 2006

Media Release 5th May 2006

The inaugural 10 minute play festival open to all participants under the age of 18.

This exciting project offers young writers, directors, actors and producers the opportunity to develop new Australian short plays, and to showcase them in front of the cream of Australia's theatre future.

Fast & Fresh is an offshoot of the famous  Short & Sweet festival, created by writer, director Director Mark Cleary .

Begun in 2002 and now entering its fifth season, Short & Sweet is the biggest ten minute play theatre festival in the world and has already helped launch the career of countless theatre professionals. In the last year the best shows from Short & Sweet have been presented at the Sydney Opera House as well as the Victorian Arts Centre in Melbourne.

Just like Short & Sweet, Fast & Fresh will:

  • showcase the best new young writers, actors, directors in Australia and give new talent an opportunity to surface
  • present a season of original 10 min plays, reflecting quality writing, performance & production skills;
  • make theatre more accessible and affordable to a wider audience;
  • inspire and educate theatre practitioners of the future to achieve higher levels of artistic quality;
  • encourage the production of high quality theatre works in a supportive environment;
  • encourage active participation by actors, writers & directors of all levels and thus foster growth in the theatre.
  • encourage people who have previously not done so to write for the theatre;
  • allow young people with an interest in the arts to perform at some of Australia's premier theatrical venues, working with professionals to extend and develop their talents.

All plays entered must be 10 minutes or less in duration and must be written and performed by people who are 18 years of age or younger, or enrolled at a secondary institution. The producers and directors of the plays are allowed to be above the age of 18.

Fast & Fresh will support existing educational aims in the English and Drama curricula and offer practical experience that will benefit both the students and their schools in an extra-curricular setting.

Benefits also include:

  • offering teachers the opportunity to produce and direct short plays to showcase their abilites outside of the school environment;
  • offering both teachers and students with a passion for the arts the opportunity to meet, network and showcase their work to teachers and students from other educational institutions, as well as the wider arts industry.
  • Fast & Fresh is to be a stimulus to create and perform work, not to control it.  Any works that are developed and performed for Fast & Fresh will not have any exclusive restrictions put on them.  This means that students have the ability to also use these works for State Drama, English, HSC and other educational opportunities.
